Development of Turbulent Biological Closure Parameterizations

چکیده

A nonlinear model for biological and physical dynamical interactions in a laminar flow field being upwelled into the mixed layer Robinson(1999) (Fig 1, below) has been extended to turbulent flow (Goodman and Robinson, 2007). The approach of the Goodman and Robinson theory has been to develop a probability density function (pdf) for the turbulent displacement field and use that to calculate the turbulence induced biological interaction (TIBI) terms, i.e.  PN , PZ   Z N  ,   , i j i j i j

Verification of Reynolds stress parameterizations from simulations

Key words hydrodynamics – methods: numerical – turbulence We determine the timescales associated with turbulent decay and isotropization in closure models using anisotropically forced and freely decaying turbulence simulations and study the applicability of these models. We compare the results from anisotropically forced three-dimensional numerical simulations with the predictions of the closur...

Film cooling effectiveness in single row of holes: First moment closure modeling

The present article focuses on the evaluation of a first-moment closure model applicable to film cooling flow and heat transfer computations. The present first-moment closure model consists of a higher level of turbulent heat flux modeling in which two additional transport equations for temperature variance kθ and its dissipation rate εθ are ...

Turbulence Modeling in Stratified Flows Subject to Advective Buoyancy Fluxes

The goal of this work is to examine in detail how turbulence evolves in the presence of both vertical stratification and horizontal (straining) buoyancy fluxes. Horizontal density gradients are a ubiquitous feature of estuarine and coastal flows, as are sheared velocity profiles. The combination of these two features produces a buoyancy flux which can be either stabilizing or destabilizing, dep...

Dealing with uncertainty: turbulent parameterizations and grid-spacing effects in numerical modelling of deep moist convective processes

Computer power has grown to the point that veryfine-mesh mesoscale modelling is now possible. Going down through scales is clumsily supposed to reduce uncertainty and to improve the predictive ability of the models. This work provides a contribution to understand how the uncertainty in the numerical weather prediction (NWP) of severe weather events is affected by increasing the model grid resol...

10: Dynamics and Modeling of Turbulent Mixing in Oceanic Flows

The long-term goal of this research is to refine and extend simple (existing) model parameterizations for turbulent diapycnal mixing for use in large scale numerical ocean models where such processes occur at the subgrid-scale. From a scientific view point, the goal is to obtain new insights into the dynamics of stratified turbulence that will translate into simple effective parameterizations f...
